Global Urban Competitiveness Project


Global Urban Competitiveness Project (GUCP) was initiated by Professor Peter Karl Kresl (Bucknell University, USA) and Professor Ni Pengfei (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China) during the first international forum on urban competitiveness in August 2004. The GUCP, officially founded up in Ottawa in April 2005, is a sustainable project on global urban competitiveness. It aims to gather global experts who are interested in urban competitiveness to make contributions. The GUCP has a committee, whose president is Professor Peter Karl Kresl and general secretary is Professor Ni Pengfei. The committee secretariat locates in the Center for City and Competitiveness, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).

GUCP Goals

1. Analyzing all aspects of the competitiveness of the worlds urban regions

2. Promoting better communication among those who are doing research on urban competitiveness

3. Enhancing the relations between urban competitiveness researchers and urban government and leaders

4. Advertising more effective urban economic strategic plans throughout the world

5. Helping municipal leaders to enhance the competitiveness of their precincts and thereby to upgrade economic welfare of their local residents

6. Encouraging researchers in both industrialized and developing economies to get more interested in and make more researches on urban competitiveness

GUCP Tasks

1. Holding international seminars on general issues of urban competitiveness every year to deepen its academic studies

2. Making policy study and policy simplification from a global perspective as constructive opinions for municipal decision-making authorities

3. Providing administrative trainings and research programs for urban government in both industrialized and developing economies
