The Release and Symposium of the China Urban Competitiveness Report (2007) was Held in Hong Kong
On March 28,2007, the Release and Symposium of the Annual Report of China’s UrbanCompetitiveness was held in Hong Kong. The Symposium was sponsored by theBetter Hong Kong Foundation, and jointly organized by the National Academy ofEconomics Strategy of CASS and the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The compositionof the 2007 Blue Book of Urban Competitiveness took more than six months, andit was led by Dr. Ni Pengfei of the CASS National Academy of EconomicsStrategy, along with nearly 100 urban competitiveness experts from famousuniversities and institutions in Mainland China, China’s Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau,as well as national statistics offices. The theme of this report was: Brand,the city’s most beautiful scenery. The report used objective data to conduct quantitativeanalysis on the comprehensive competitiveness of 200 cites with prefecture-leveland above in Mainland China, China’s Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
According to thereport, the top 10 cities in urban competitiveness were: Hong Kong, Shenzhen,Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Taipei, Wuxi, Suzhou, Foshan, and Macau. HongKong ranked 1st in terms of scale competitiveness, efficiency competitiveness, benefitcompetitiveness, and quality competitiveness.
Ms. Karen Tang,Chief Executive Officer of the Better Hong Kong Foundation believed that if HongKong wanted to maintain the competitive edge, it should establish a pillarindustry. According Hong Kong’s advantages in finance, trade and foreigninvestment, the development of economy in the headquarters would be the key to consolidateHong Kong’s economic status and extend the service functions. In the territory outsideof Hong Kong, expanding the hinterland of Hong Kong and strengthening regionalcooperation were the important ways to put to good use of Hong Kong’s strengthsand competitiveness. In addition, with the rapidly changing global economicenvironment and the changing competitive conditions in the world’s majorcities, Hong Kong government and the industries must seize the time and opportunityto succeed.
