The completionof the Annual Report of China’s Urban Competitiveness 2009 was led by ProfessorNi Pengfei from the National Academy of Economics Strategy of CASS, along withnearly 100 urban competitiveness experts from famous universities and institutionsin Mainland China, China’s Taiwan,Hong Kong and Macau. It used objective data toconduct quantitative analysis on the comprehensive competitiveness of 294prefecture-level and above cities in Mainland China, China’s Taiwan, Hong Kongand Macau. According to the report, China’s top ten most competitive cities were:Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Tianjin,Suzhou and Kaohsiung.
Ms. Karen Tang, CEOof the Better Hong Kong Foundation, said that Hong Kong had always ranked highin competitiveness in China; this year, it also ranked 26th among 500 citiesaround the world. Under the current globalized competition, as well as the globalfinancial and economic crisis since the beginning of last year, theinternational economic order would be inevitably led to major changes. Incontrast, China enjoyed rapid economic development in recent years, because itseconomic structure had alleviated the impact of the global crisis. Hong Kong pursuedan open economy, which was easily influenced by the external environment. Asthe saying “noprogress simply means regression”, Hong Kong should constantlystrive to become stronger. If Hong Kong could effectively use the existing advantagesin international business and China’s development, actively explore opportunitiesof government and civil cooperation in the Pearl River Delta, face and resolvethe uncoordinated development in the region, and adopt new thinking and visionin regional strategic development, Hong Kong would be able to create multi-beneficialcooperation and opportunities in the region and even nationwide.
