Fan Gang
Fan Gang, Doctorin Economics and Doctoral Supervisor, serves as Vice President of China Societyof Economic Reform (CSER), Director of China Reform Foundation, Director of ChinaNational Economic Research Institute and President of China Comprehensive DevelopmentInstitute (Shenzhen). He concurrently acts as economics professor of Peking UniversityHSBC BusinessSchool and ChineseAcademy of Social Sciences (CASS) Graduate School.
He did farm workin Production and Construction Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army inHeilongjiang in 1969 and was transferred to Weichang Countyin Hebei Province in 1975. In 1978, he wasadmitted to major in Political Economics in Economics Department (graduatingin1982) at Hebei University. After graduation, he was admittedto Economics Department at CASS Graduate School,majoring in "Western Economics". From 1985 to 1987, he went to the United States to do Visiting Research in NationalBureau of Economy Research and Harvard University. In 1988, he receivedhis PhD in Economics and at the same year entered CASS Institute of Economics. Heserved as Editor-in-Chief of Economic ResearchEditorial Department from 1992 to 1993 and as Deputy Director of CASS Instituteof Economics from 1994 to 1995.
His major works include"Outlines of Public Macroeconomic Theory" (editor-in-chief) and"Comparison and Integration of Three Major Modern Economic Theoretical System”,“Market Mechanism and Economic Efficiency", “Gradual Path-EconomicThoughts on Economic Reform", " Political Economics of China's GradualReform" and other academic monographs, as well as "Economic Theories","Fang Gang’s Thesis", "Going Into the World of Risks", “Reasonsof Development” and other Collected Papers. He has published nearly a hundredof academic thesis as "Grey Market Theory", “On Reform Process”, “DynamicTheories of Reform” and others on Chinese academic journals as Economic Research. He is editor-in-chiefof English monograph "Industrial Reform and Macroeconomic Instability in China"(2000). In 2003, he published Japanese monograph "China: UnfinishedReform", which had a great effect in theoretical circles at home andabroad. He has won Sun Yefang Excellent Economic Theses Award twice in 1991 and2005. In 1992, he was exceptionally promoted as CASS Researcher and was electedas National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution. In 1993,he became to become one of the youngest Doctoral Supervisor in the field of China’s Social Science.His major research fields in recent years are Macroeconomics, Institutional Economicsand "Transitional Economics".
Fan Gang is often invitedby leading officials of Central Government and Ministries to give advices fortheir decision-making on a variety of issues on economic policies. Also, heoffers a variety of consultations and advices on economic policies to localgovernments, serving as economic consultant and taking many other socialpositions in many local governments. At the same time, he has been invited toserve as economic research consultant by the World Bank, UNDP, ESCAP, OECD andother international organizations in recent years. He has visited manycountries as invited, giving lectures, attending academic conferences and doingcooperative researches. He has published many papers in English oninternational economic journals. He is often invited to give lectures as mainspeaker in various international conferences.
In 2004, Fan Gangwas awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Auvergne University of France. He wasselected as one of "100 World's Most Respected Public Intellectuals” twicein 2005 and 2008, which was held by America’sForeign Policy Journal and Britain’s Prospect Magazine.
